Frequently Ask Questions when moving in Queens

Frequently Ask Questions when moving in Manhattan

The average cost of moving in Queens can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Mack’s Moving provides transparent flat fee pricing for the cost of your Queens move. Your move in Queens Is calculated by our flat fee moving formula. The volume of your items, the mileage of your move, and any special requests & moving complexities all factor into your moving cost. Check out our average Queens moving cost guide where we break down the cost of an average move for studio and multi-room apartments in Queens.

Queensoffers a variety of neighborhoods for every lifestyle.

In Queens, the first and last few days of each month are peak moving days, especially in spring and summer. This is because most new leases start at the beginning of the month. If you are able to, move in the middle of the month to ensure availability with our movers.

Both morning and afternoon moves are popular moving times in Queens. Mornings are in high demand at any time of year, as many people want to settle into their new home earlier. Another reason why morning moves are popular is that some elevator buildings typically don’t let people move in after 5pm, making morning and afternoon moves a necessity.

Fridays and weekends are high-demand moving days as most people try to avoid taking too much time off work. Sunday can also be a cheaper move for walk up apartments and house moves since elevator buildings do not generally let people move in & out on a Sunday. If you can afford to take a day out of the office, the start of the week is always a more flexible time to move, from Monday to Wednesday.

As Queens’s best moving company, Mack’s Moving offers extensive moving services in Queens. No matter what you are moving or where you are moving it to, we’ve got you covered 24/7, 365 days a year. Services include:

  • Local moves
  • Long Distance out of state moves
  • Residential moves
  • Office and commercial moves
  • Storage Services
  • Packing and unpacking
  • Moving boxes and packing supplies
  • Plastic moving bin rental service

Yes, Mack’s Moving offers short and long term storage services in Queens. Our On-Demand Queens storage service is affordable and reliable. We will come to you, pick up your items, move them to our storage facility in NYC and deliver them back to you when you need them. Never visit a storage unit or have the hassle of moving your own items.

The general rule of thumb is to base your tip on a percentage of your total move cost, and tipping 15% – 20% of your total cost is an industry average. We recommend a tiered approach depending on whether you’re managing a large relocation, a medium sized move with some challenges or a small local move. In the end, if you can’t afford a tip, good reviews on websites such as Yelp, Google and Facebook are much appreciated by your movers and go a long way in recognizing their hard work.

Our top Queens moving tips

Coming in at 178 square miles, Queens is the biggest borough in NYC. It’s the home of both major airports in the city, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International. So, if you have to leave, you’ll be able to get where you’re going easily.

If it’s sand and ocean views you’re seeking though, you won’t have to look very far. Queens boasts a number of islands and fantastic beaches, including Jacob Riis Park and Rockaway Beach.

Just like the your neighbors in Queens (2 million of them), you’ll soon find out that there’s even more to brag about when it comes to this part of the city, including:

  • All that jazz. This borough has a musical history that’ll have you tapping your feet. The Queens neighborhood of Corona was home to Louis Armstrong, and you can step back into time when visiting his home. It’s now a historical site and archive of his brand of music. Jazz greats, including Count Basie, “Fats” Waller, and Milt Hinter have called Addisleigh Park their home, now a historical landmark district of the St. Albans neighborhood. To further celebrate this borough’s “home of jazz” status in the present day, you can check out the Queens Jazz Trail map and frequent Flushing Town Hall or clubs like Terraza 7 or Jackson Room to enjoy some performances of this musical genre.
  • Multicultural & multilingual. Get ready to listen and learn from those speaking from a different tongue. Queens is second to none when it comes to being ethnically diverse and is considered the language capital of the world. You might overhear tones of Turkish, Tagalog, Tajik, Tuscan, Tzotzil and more; it’s home to people who speak over 160 different languages. What’s more: the population of Queens’ Chinatown has surpassed that of Manhattan’s Chinatown. So, you may be in for a special treat in your own part of the city when it comes to Asian markets and dim sum!
  • Cost of living. The cost of riding the buses and subways may be the same ($2.75 per ride) and the sales tax is the same for all five boroughs (8.875%), but the difference in affordable housing prices from Manhattan to Queens is pretty different. Rent in Queens is about 30% cheaper on average than Manhattan — and that can make a big difference to your metropolitan budget. The average rent cost of a 1 bedroom in Manhattan may cost around $3,100, whereas in Queens, you’ll pay closer to $2,200. The median cost of those who are paying a mortgage in Queens is around $2,600 per month. Some additional good news here: if you still have Manhattan or the other boroughs on your mind, you can easily visit or even commute to work from Queens as your home base.
  • History and the Arts. In addition to the vast cultural diversity and musical history, you won’t tire of what additional delights this borough contains. You can visit the Museum of Modern Art’s PS1 location and celebrate the history of cinema and film in Astoria’s Museum of the Moving Image. If you find yourself in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, you can check out the Unisphere, a globe-shaped structure commissioned for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. You can also take a tour of the Ganesh Temple of Queens, erected in the 1970s for the growing Hindu population in the borough. There’s a basement canteen with reportedly tasty South Indian Dosas to make the visit extra tasty. If you’ve got reverence for famed escape artists, you can also pay your respects to Harry Houdini’s final resting place in Machpelah Cemetery in Glendale, Queens.
  • Play ball! Hey there, sports fans! Living in Queens puts you in the middle of all the action, or should we say sporting arenas. Get ready to root for your home team at Citi Field for the New York Mets. If hoops are more your style, grab your foam finger and cheer on the NBA G-League team, the Long Island Nets. Or, watch a winning goal with the New York Cosmos soccer team. You might also find yourself Falling in Love in Flushing Meadows at the National Tennis Center — home of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.

These guys were fantastic, they did everything we asked of them and WAY more. Our move unexpectedly ran over and required two trips and they stayed the extra hours and made absolutely sure we were completely taken care of. Highly recommend.

When they ask you to sign for the start and end time, MAKE SURE TO ASK TO READ WHAT YOU'RE SIGNING!!! The movers may try to rush you through the process or insist on verbalizing what it is but DON'T DO THAT! Just read before you sign since you might be waiving your rights in case of damage. Fortunately I only had small damages but according their BBB reviews, that seems to be a BIG and RECURRING issue. The total price ended up being ~$600 more than quoted and I don't know if I'd recommend Mack's Moving Company again. They broke my fan and charged me for a mattress bag and tv box that didn't get used. I had my own tv box, so it's okay. But seeing them drag the mattress all over the dirty floor was very upsetting. Out of the three movers, Tomas was the only professional. He had moving gloves, smarts to get stuff around corners without damage, friendly, and sanitized the mattress after I made a comment about it being dragged around dirty floors. I didn't ask him to clean it so it was super nice and professional of him to do that on his own. The driver was okay but seemed a little high? I don't mind - and I might totally be wrong and that's just his personality. Nothing really got damaged during the drive as far as we can tell. The 16 year old kid Mack's moving employs had a bit of an attitude but very much in line with his age after he told me how old he was (unprompted - but it made sense). They took an hour or two for lunch mid trip but they asked before hand and all was good. There was some miscommunication though and the owner called me a week after the trip saying they undercharged me and wanted almost $500 more! We cleared it up since he was going to charge for the time they took for lunch but didn't realize. The price was good, but I was misled with the quote. They charge roughly the same rate twiceover for transport and labor... IE: if they take an hour driving to pickup from dispatch, you get charged an hour for labor PLUS whatever distance they did rounded up. That wasn't very clear in the estimate and a not nice surprise...

Quick and easy pricing. Was able to move with 3 days notice. Team was professional and worked "smarter", not harder. They did this by reviewing each space to determine what went where then got to work. Used them for a short move within the capital region. Pricing was the best of their insured competitors

We just had Mack’s Moving do an in-house move for us. From the second floor to the first floor. Donovan and Aidan were very professional. The one piece of furniture I thought would be an issue, wasn’t. They were able to move it downstairs. I highly recommend these guys for your next move.
